Contemplative Arts and Sciences

Founded in 1858, Frederick Douglass School continues to honor its rich history by providing a high-quality education for its students and continuing to grow and expand its academic programs. The New Contemplative Arts and Sciences program provides a balanced educational experience using dance, movement and the arts to help students develop vital skills that empower them to contribute to the community in meaningful ways.

Introduced for the 2017-18 school year for students in grades K-6, students will explore academic concepts through a creative lens. As they explore the intersection of arts and academics, our students will learn who they are, how they relate to the world and how to affect change in themselves and their community.

By integrating the arts and movement with projects that pose real-life challenges, our students will gain the skills to think creatively, critically and compassionately. Weekly sessions with artists will further enable Frederick Douglass students to connect classroom studies with real-world applications.

Frederick Douglass School students will benefit from:

  • A challenging curriculum that uses project-based and place-based learning to teach a real-world approach to problem-solving
  • A focus on mindful learning that promotes self-awareness and self-control
  • Opportunities to work alongside local and regional artists
  • Participation in public performances (including dance, music, art and martial arts)
  • A full-time resource coordinator who secures partners to provide mental, cognitive and character support to help students succeed
  • Intensive partnerships with the world-renown Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (DCDC), Miami University and more
  • Exposure to a wealth of careers in the arts industry
